Asperger syndrome is an uncommon condition, but suspected by researchers to be probably more common than classic autism. A very famous study conducted in the year 1993 estimated prevalence at 36 per 10000 children for Asperger syndrome and 5 per 10000 for autism. More recent research establishes the prevalence of Asperger's Syndrome as approximately 1 in 300, affecting boys to girls with a ratio of 10:1 (2009).
Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome disorder is a serious problem. Often Asperger Syndrome in a child remains undetected until mid school (research says the average age at diagnosis is several years later than for autism). Obviously, this can be traumatic for the child and family. Furthermore, a late diagnosis cuts down the most effective intervention years.
Asperger's is often referred to as the "invisible syndrome" because of the internal struggles these children have without outwardly demonstrating any real noticeable symptoms. Once identified and diagnosed, intervention can be as challenging.
